The 2018 Manawatu Car Club Winter Series gets underway this weekend at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, and a quality field of Formula First racers are set to get some preseason miles under their belts.
The winter series acts as the traditional precursor to the national Formula First Championship and often see’s those new to the class utilise the four round, 12-race series and copious test sessions as a way to settle into their cars.
Driving this weekend are the likes of reigning national champion, Callum Crawley and SpeedSport Scholarship winner, Ronan Murphy. Joining them is Andrew Tierney, Taylor Hurst, Blake Evans. Another newbie to the class is Kyan Davies, racing with Sabre Motorsport. Davies has spent the majority of his previous racing right-out-sideways, coming from the speedway scene.
Competitors will enjoy eight test sessions on Saturday before a qualifying session and three races on Sunday. Sunday mornings qualifying session is 5mins shorter than enjoyed in the national championship and quickly teaches the rookies the strategy of qualifying. Sunday’s races are also reduced to six laps each.
