The annual precursor to Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship, the Manfeild Winter Series, kicks off this weekend at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon.
The Manawatu Car Club’s annual ‘Winter Series’ has become the traditional warm up to the National Championship with competitors using the track time to test, tune and develop their cars for the coming season.
In 2017 drivers will contest for the Vault 168 Formula First Cup across the series’ four rounds, each taking place on the first weekend of June, July, August and September. The familiar format of qualifying followed by three races remains, however all that takes place on the Sunday while Saturday is reserved for large amounts of testing often not given at National meetings.
The copious amounts of testing and track time are a critical part of getting rookie drivers, who have often never driven a race car at all let alone around a full-sized track, up to speed with the race craft, pace and strategy required to succeed in the NZ Formula First Championship.
One of those rookies will be the new SpeedSport Scholarship recipient Conrad Clark. Clark has proven himself in a Formula First around Manfeild’s backtrack and is likely to be a contender this weekend.
The action kicks off at 9:30am on Sunday with qualifying before three races throughout the day. Entry is free!
