Pukekohe Preview: Round 3

The opening two rounds of the 2019/20 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship have had a somewhat familiar feel about them. The close and exciting racing has continued and our defending champion, Whakatane’s Reece Hendl-Cox, 18, has once again been the benchmark driver.

Hendl-Cox has won five out of the six races so far this season to etch out a 32-point lead over Palmerston North school teacher Chris Symon, 28. It hasn’t been an easy run for Hendl-Cox though, with every race coming down to the final few corners of the last lap.

Sitting in third is Auckland’s Liam Foster, 23, who fell just shy of winning his first race of the season during the previous round at Pukekohe Park. The race saw the first five cars cross the line in a swarm separated by just 0.225s with the win coming down to just 0.005s between Symon and Foster.

Tailing the back of that swarm was Hamilton’s Asten Addy, 15. Addy is currently leading the coveted rookie of the year title over Auckland’s Matthew McCutcheon, 16. Addy holds a mere three-point advantage over McCutcheon who sit fourth and fifth respectively overall.

This weekend marks the third round of the 2019/20 Championship. Having started at Manfeild in October before venturing north to Pukekohe Park in early November.

Expect to see some exciting, dynamic and action-packed battles happening at the front of the field. It’s standard for the 1200cc air-cooled VW power cars to three-wide into and through a flat-out turn one. The cars will then form a Formula First freight train down the long back straight before an exciting game of who can brake the latest takes place at the complex!

The action kicks off on Friday with testing before a 15-minute qualifying gets underway at 9:30AM on Saturday morning. Race seven (8-laps) of the championship starts at 2:05PM on Saturday which will broadcasted LIVE on Sky Sport 5! Two more races on Sunday at 9:00AM and 2:10PM round out the weekend.

Formula First TV will be active across the weekend bringing you all the news from the racing on our Facebook page.
