Round 2 of the 2019/20 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship takes place this weekend at Pukekohe Park. Pukekohe marks the second stop on the Formula First calendar for the second season in a row, although this time the new 2.91km layout with the back-straight complex will be used.
Last time at the South Auckland circuit it was filled with chaos. Chris Symon, fresh off a round one clean sweep, took the opening race of the weekend. That race was marred by a massive crash for Taylor Hurst which saw him collect the wall almost head-on across the finish line. The second race was won by rookie Thomas Boniface before Symon fell victim to his race six curse in the final race of the weekend. With Symon retired, Reece Hendl-Cox rose to the top spot and won the race. This catapulted him up to second place in the points and within striking distance of Symon.
This time around, Hendl-Cox goes into the weekend with the form run whilst Symon follows close behind. Symon finished runner-up twice at the season opener along with third-place in the final race of the weekend. Liam Foster sits third in the points after two podiums.
Leading the way for the rookies is Speedway convert and SpeedSport Scholarship winner Matthew McCutcheon. McCutcheon sits fourth overall after taking an impressive podium in the first race of the season. Not far off him is Asten Addy in fifth. Addy, also a rookie, is just 11-points behind McCutcheon in what is looking to be another hotly contested rookie battle.
The action kicks off on Friday with testing before a 15-minute qualifying gets underway at 11:40AM on Saturday morning. Race four (8-laps) of the championship starts at 3:10PM on Saturday afternoon before two more races on Sunday at 10:40AM and 2:10PM.
Formula First TV will be active across the weekend bringing you all the news from the racing on our Facebook page. We will also have a special guest presenter joining us as our regular host’s presence was demanded elsewhere.
