This weekend sees the tail end of the 2018/19 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship commence at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon.
Just a fortnight ago Reece Hendl-Cox continued his domination of the championship, albeit being beaten in the second race of the weekend by Billy Frazer. Hendl-Cox leads the championship by a comfy 102 points over Chris Symon.
Symon started the championship with four wins on the trot but an engine failure in race-six signalled the end of his ultra-competitive run as more engine issues have plagued him since. While Symon sits second currently, the battle for his position is hotting up with Billy Frazer now just 34 points from second and Liam Foster just 22 points behind Frazer.
The battle for the rookie of the year title is getting hot too. Thomas Boniface leads SpeedSport Scholarship driver Ronan Murphy by 9.5 points. The battle for the coverted award has been a tit-for-tat affair this season with both drivers leading the points for the same ammount of time over the first half of the season.
The racing is bound to be close and intense this weekend so make sure you head out to Manfeild if you’re in the area. Central Muscle Cars and the NZ Formula 1600 (Ford) Championship are also racing, and even better, entry is FREE on both days!
Formula First TV will be active across the weekend, with a weekend preview coming Friday night and interviews with our race winners over the weekend. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates over the weekend!
