Round 7: Taupo Preview

This weekend the penultimate round of the 2018/19 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship takes place at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park. It’s our first visit to Taupo’s circuit this season and all eyes will be on the front runners of Reece Hendl-Cox and Chris Symon, who sit first and second in the points.

Following his Hampton Downs dominance Hendl-Cox leads Symon by 100-points, with Billy Frazer sitting in third, 174-points from the lead. With just 450-points left on offer over the final two rounds of the championship, it is a possibility Hendl-Cox could wrap the championship up this weekend. However, it would require Symon to run into some hugely significant issues as Hendl-Cox would need a 225-point lead come Sunday afternoon.

The battle of the rookies has seen another turn of the tables, with Ronan Murphy now holding a 76-point lead over Thomas Boniface. Boniface had a slight advantage over Murphy heading into the previous round but a serious of mechanical failures resulting in two DNF’s and a lowly finish saw the swing in Murphy’s favour.

Ron Carter still leads the ‘Sunset’ Championship, for our more experienced racers. His nearest rival, Bob Dillow, sits over 200-points behind in 12th while Carter sits eighth, knocking on the door of Boniface in seventh.

Formula First TV will be active across the weekend, with a weekend preview coming Friday night and interviews with our race winners over the weekend. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates over the weekend!
