Shepherd Family Trophy revealed

The Formula First Association are pleased to accept and announce the donation of the SHEPHERD FAMILY TROPHY.  It will be awarded annually to the Winning Crew of the NZ Formula First Championship.

The announcement of the trophy comes after the Shepherd family was recently acknowledged at the MotorSport New Zealand awards with a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement. The family has taken nine Formula First Championships during their time in the class, seven of those going to Michael with the remaining two belonging to younger brother Rowan.

Michael Shepherd, 2015/16 Champion spoke to formulafirst.co.nz about the donation of the trophy.

“Our family love motorsport and we really love Formula First.  It’s a great class and we have been part of it since 2000.  We always wanted to donate a meaningful trophy to the class when we stepped away from competing, so to acknowledge more formally the efforts of the teams and individuals that prepare the cars is really special. Rowan and I chose to backdate the winners of this trophy to acknowledge the Teams and Crew that won during our time in the class,  and also give some meaning behind the name on the front of the Trophy with Dad being such a driving force behind the success”.

“Interestingly only 4 crews have won the championship in the last 16 years including Sabre Motorsport, Scorpion Racecars, Selby Allison and of course Dad – Winning the championship is just as big for these people as it is the driver so it’s great to finally recognise and record their achievements.  This coming season will be another exciting one I’m sure and we look forward to presenting this Trophy come the end of the season to the newly crowned Winning Crew!”
