Chris Symon has won a thrilling race five of the 2019/20 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship. The race came down to a drag race between five cars, with Symon taking victory by just 0.005s! The top five were separated by just 0.225s across the line.
Symon capitalised on his pole position start and took control of the race from the get-go. Reece Hendl-Cox looked like he was stuck in the second bunch of cars as Symon started to drive away from the field in the early laps. Just shy of the midway point Hendl-Cox emerged as a contender again, taking the lead off Symon.
As Symon and Hendl-Cox battled it out, the pack behind closed in which lead to a five-car battle for the win on the final lap. The five cars ran side-by-side until the chequered flag with Symon leading the way despite a hard charge from Liam Foster who finished a very close second.
Series leader Hendl-Cox took third ahead of Amy Smith and Asten Addy. Smith lowered the lap record, which she previously held, to a 1:21.383 whilst Addy was the highest placed rookie.
Kyan Davie recorded a solid sixth after his front row start while Matthew McCutcheon took seventh. Leo Scott beat him Louis Redshaw in eighth with Ron Carter rounding out the top ten.
