The race to become the first father and son champions

Not only is the 2020-21 Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship up for grabs this weekend in Taupō, there’s another serious bragging right on the line too. The race to become the first father and son championship winners in NZ Formula First history is on.

The championship decider this weekend at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park will no doubt be thrilling right until the final corner of the final race of the season as Liam Foster tries to chase down Chris Symon. Symon currently leads Foster by 116-points, which may seem like a done deal for most but nothing is ever certain in the NZ Formula First Championship.

And to make matters less certain, there’s not a clear form guide for the weekend’s racing. At the previous round at Pukekohe Chris Symon won all three races while Foster suffered a DNF result which opened up the points deficit dramatically. However, last time out at Taupo in January it was Foster who had the edge on Symon after winning two of the three races.

A unique addition to this years title fight is, no matter who wins between Symon and Foster, history will be made as both of their fathers have won the NZ Formula First Championship. Ross Symon, father of Chris, won the championship four times in a row between 1985 and 1989 whilst Ian Foster, father of Liam, won the championship in the 2008-09 season.

The achievement will be a first in the NZ Formula First Championship and will be just the third time both father and son have won the same national championship in MotorSport New Zealand history.

Three eight-lap races at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park this weekend will decide the victor between Symon and Foster. qualifying and one race will take place on Saturday with the final two races taking place on Sunday. You can stay up to date with the fight with regular video updates on the NZ Formula First Facebook page which will be posted throughout the weekend.
